First ever LiveJournal User-Representative Election
PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU VOTE!!!

Eligibility
Those eligible to vote in this poll are:
-Users with accounts created before March 11, 2008
-Users who are not using Cyrillic language services (there is a poll for Cyrillic users at lj_election_ru)
-Users who have accounts with validated email addresses

Voting
Users should select their first choice, second choice, and third choice candidates from the drop-down list.

Determining the winner
The poll will be closed at 9:00 p.m. PDT Thursday, May 29, 2008
-If a user has more than 50% of the first-choice vote, that candidate will be declared the winner
-If no user has more than 50% of the first-choice vote, we will begin using an Instant Runoff process. The user with the lowest tally for first-choice vote will be eliminated, and the second choice candidate on those ballots will be substituted as first choice. This process will continue (drop lowest candidate, reassign to next vote, tally again) until any user has more than 50% of the vote.
-If all ballots are exhausted and no candidate has more than 50% of the vote, we will return to the first round and award the election to the candidate with the most 1st choice votes.

Member Term
The new Advisory Board member will be announced by the end of the day on Friday, May 30, 2008 and will begin their one-year term of service on June 1, 2008.

THANK YOU!

so is the jameth with the rape com?
or the jameth with the let's trigger epileptic seizures "jokes"?

Or are they perchance, one and the same person, and who on the green hills of Terra would think such a person soulless little monster a fit representative of the people at whom he scoffs and torments?

We now have a community for support of this wonderful write-in candidate that shall outshine all the candidates on the ballot in 2008. I present to you: manbearpig2008.

The choice is simple. If you don't want establishment, ManBearPig is for you.

There should be two!
I am seeing some kind of actual diversity here - there are the oh-so-serious and then the -I-do-have-a-sense-of-humor-and-I-use-it-all-the-time! candidates. Sadly, I like both kinds. Sadly, only one rep position is posted. Sadly, I like at least 4 different candidates. Woefully, I must make a decision and then hope that it actually counts.
Sadly, out of all the millions of users, I see numbers only adding up to less than 10K. Why is that, when this is where you can have a voice? Vote, people!! VOTE NOW!

"50% of the vote"?
Can you clarify if the information in this post is correct: http://rho.livejournal.com/395325.html ?

It's not clear whether there's a requirement for a candidate to get 50% of all votes that were placed (in which case, as the link points out, it's very unlikely - at the time of writing, no candidate has 1st, 2nd and 3rd votes totalling 50% - and so we'll get FPTP), or is it 50% of votes that have not been discarded?
Millibrachiate Tentacular Coelenteratenja on May 25th, 2008 05:50 pm (UTC)
Re: "50% of the vote"?
imc has analysed the code, and says it's the latter - 50% of remaining votes in each round, not 50% of the number of first-round votes. Edit: specifically, looking at the code (which is linked to indirectly from the post you give above), $combined_total is recalculated at each round in $total_display(), and is passed to $has_majority() which checks if any candidate has more than half that total.

It's instant.

If no candidate has more than 50% of the vote, remove the candidate with the fewest votes from the round and distribute their second-place votes to the other candidates.

Repeat until one candidate has more than 50%.

It just takes computer cycles, not any more voting.

Why can I not cast a vote?
I tried to vote today and cannot. The poll is displaying as if I already cast a vote, which I most certainly did not, since I have been unavailable since the 21st. Either someone stole my vote or something is wrong.

Re: Public Service Announcement!
In my case, when I was voting for super super serial, I voted the same person on all three choices because I wanted to demonstrate that was the only person I wanted for the job. I didn't vote for one or two other people because I didn't want anyone other than that person to have the position. It doesn't matter to me that my second and third choice votes don't count.

I still want ManBearPig on the ticket though. Then, I'd vote for a second per... er... entity.
