First ever LiveJournal User-Representative Election
PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU VOTE!!!

Eligibility
Those eligible to vote in this poll are:
-Users with accounts created before March 11, 2008
-Users who are not using Cyrillic language services (there is a poll for Cyrillic users at lj_election_ru)
-Users who have accounts with validated email addresses

Voting
Users should select their first choice, second choice, and third choice candidates from the drop-down list.

Determining the winner
The poll will be closed at 9:00 p.m. PDT Thursday, May 29, 2008
-If a user has more than 50% of the first-choice vote, that candidate will be declared the winner
-If no user has more than 50% of the first-choice vote, we will begin using an Instant Runoff process. The user with the lowest tally for first-choice vote will be eliminated, and the second choice candidate on those ballots will be substituted as first choice. This process will continue (drop lowest candidate, reassign to next vote, tally again) until any user has more than 50% of the vote.
-If all ballots are exhausted and no candidate has more than 50% of the vote, we will return to the first round and award the election to the candidate with the most 1st choice votes.

Member Term
The new Advisory Board member will be announced by the end of the day on Friday, May 30, 2008 and will begin their one-year term of service on June 1, 2008.

THANK YOU!

But will LJ accept the drop outs or process the IRV with the candidate's votes intact? It (at least theoretically) makes a difference.

It's nice to be able to ask questions of a candidate.

I don't have any, but it's nice to know that if I did, it wouldn't just be dismissed as "negative energy".

I think the fact that people are still playing this game even when someone got a death threat, and the person who received it has actually gone out and confirmed it, is really fucking sick.

Call me a drama queen. Call me whatever. I think this stupid election thing has really revealed a lot of human nature to me.

I hope they find out who sent it, and suspend them from LJ. This election has got out of hand. It is not even a very powerful postition, and well take a lot of hard work to make any difference

Did you see where someone asked Legomymalfoy why she wasn't allowing anything that isn't praising or adoring her on her post?

LMM's response: Well, it's all just negative energy, isn't it?

I have no idea why fandom is so eager to elect someone who thinks entertaining dialogue and actual questions concerning her campaign is just "negative energy"? It's hard for me to understand why LMM is even running for this position if she's so unable to tolerate opinions that disagree with hers. I wish I could blame this on the death threats, but she had established this pattern of behavior before the elections even started (i.e., the post advertising the Abuse Team that didn't allow criticism of AT or LJ).

Anyway.

I posted this to my own blog a couple of days ago, but maybe I should have posted it here...

Is anyone else thinking that this is the most entertaining "reality" show that the livejournal management have ever staged?

We have a group of people competing for the post of official scapegoat, basically - because whoever wins this is going to be blamed for every bit of crass mismanagement and bad PR the owners pull. I'm pretty sure that the job comes with no power whatever, so about all that you can do is bitch at the company, who have no commitment or legal obligation to do anything that the advisory board recommends.

Meanwhile all of them are doing the equivalent of going into the diary room and posting their thoughts, in some cases not to their own advantage, and eventually most of them will be voted off the island and back into well-deserved obscurity.

Since legomymalfoy has now disabled all ways to contact her unless you're her LJ friend (and by "now" I mean in the last few hours, not back when she received the INTERNET DEATH THREATS OMG), I'll just post this here:

Dissent? Difference of opinion? Nah, it's all just "negative energy"

JFC, Internet. This is your choice? Wow. Not just an Abuse Team member, but one who equates all opinions other than hers and even attempts to survey her opinion as "negative energy"? So really, what she's saying is that Scott McLellan is her dissidents are "just haters". Particularly funny: ending a comment with "wouldn't you agree?" ... and then freezing replies.

Oh god, is this going to be amazingly funny.

Open letter to legomymalfoy, since, whoops, I can't talk to you within your magical JOURNAL OF SOLITUDE because that would be, y'know, negative energy:

Yes, other LJ users are free to police their journal however they see fit. However, MOST LJ USERS ARE NOT RUNNING FOR A POSITION TO REPRESENT THE USERBASE. When you make yourself into a public figure, you have to expect (and be able to deal with) differing opinions. You don't get to play thought police and "my journal, my rules". You don't get to just ignore the valid concerns of your constituents (or future constituents) because OMG MY SPACE IS MINE--particularly not when you've gone out of your way to make yourself unavailable for discussion in every other forum.

Jesus Christ. The smartest thing this chick ever did was "go on vacation" for the duration of the campaign, because the few times she's spoken up have shown her to be utterly incompetent, to have no understanding of what the position is supposed to entail ("LJ doesn't see a conflict of interest, so there must not be one!"), and to be pro-censorship (lol surprise from an Abuse Nazi).

Why, why could fandom not have backed vichan, who, despite the fact that we disagree over whether discussing the ramifications of underaged slash fics equals bashing fandom, is smart, honest, fair, doesn't pull this shit, and, OH YEAH, isn't an LJ cop?

Wait, I know the answer to that one: humour holds the universe together. When multiple futures are possible, the one that's the funniest, from some perspective, usually triumphs. And this certainly is that.

ETA: I tried to send her a link to this (since it purports to be an open letter, after all). She is now only accepting comments from her friends and has disabled receiving LJ messages. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA! She just flat-out refuses to be communicated with by the people she will allegedly be representing. That's like your Congressman having an unlisted office number. She is increasingly precious.
ladylawanda on May 29th, 2008 07:38 pm (UTC)
Well as long as no one has a way to send her a death threat, she and her family will be nice and safe since she apparently feels that ANY question of the safety of her family is less important than an LJ election.

Do a real IRV vote!
Do you realize how preposterous this voting system is? 23 candidates, and you can only vote for 3 choices? The chances of someone getting over 50% are low, so you're effectively saying that only the first round counts. But unlike a simple election where people just vote for one, you've constructed something that looks like instant runoff, and that will fool a lot of voters who don't think about it too much. They will be misled into voting for a minor candidate 1st, if that minor candidate is their favorite, not realizing they're throwing away their vote by doing so.

If nobody gets over 50% after round three, please do the sensible thing: scrap this election and start over. Either do a REAL instant runoff vote (see http://www.demochoice.org/ ) or just do a simple plurality-wins vote that's honest and clear so people know that's what they're voting in.

The other LJ election is over. A quick translation via Google (sorry, I don't speak any other languages so it'll have to do) says:
Dear candidates and voters,

Today at 17:00 concluded the vote for the representative of the Russian-speaking community in the Supervisory Board LJ. Thank you for all involved. Total participated in the voting 9586 accounts.

The voting, counting algorithm and distribution of votes will be declared in this community tomorrow, May 30, at 10:00.

All claims on the results of the elections also will be taken tomorrow.

Also, the post before it seems to say the candidates were all on TV programming there too.

I'm expecting a last minute surge of sock puppet voting to guarantee LMM's victory over jameth, because they just KNOW that jameth is going to finally use his own sock farm at the last minute to achieve total victory!

Except jameth is the one running the one living-breathing-human one vote plank, so there won't be anything from his camp, and we'll just see validation that yes, LMM won a cheap rigged election.

Hell, I plan on going to her journal to congratulate her on her victory when the polls close. Oh wait, that's right, I'm not on her flist and can't talk to her. duhr.
