First ever LiveJournal User-Representative Election
PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU VOTE!!!

Eligibility
Those eligible to vote in this poll are:
-Users with accounts created before March 11, 2008
-Users who are not using Cyrillic language services (there is a poll for Cyrillic users at lj_election_ru)
-Users who have accounts with validated email addresses

Voting
Users should select their first choice, second choice, and third choice candidates from the drop-down list.

Determining the winner
The poll will be closed at 9:00 p.m. PDT Thursday, May 29, 2008
-If a user has more than 50% of the first-choice vote, that candidate will be declared the winner
-If no user has more than 50% of the first-choice vote, we will begin using an Instant Runoff process. The user with the lowest tally for first-choice vote will be eliminated, and the second choice candidate on those ballots will be substituted as first choice. This process will continue (drop lowest candidate, reassign to next vote, tally again) until any user has more than 50% of the vote.
-If all ballots are exhausted and no candidate has more than 50% of the vote, we will return to the first round and award the election to the candidate with the most 1st choice votes.

Member Term
The new Advisory Board member will be announced by the end of the day on Friday, May 30, 2008 and will begin their one-year term of service on June 1, 2008.

THANK YOU!

I'm curious as to what Jameth has said that makes everyone happy with the idea that he has fantasies about raping people he meets on LJ and belongs to a group whose sole purpose is to share such fantasies. As a Jameth sockpuppet, maybe you could tell us.

Based on your pattern over the last few days, these two could get DNA tests, post the results, prove you wrong (again) and you'd just scurry back under your rock and not acknowledge your error. So why even bother. Not to mention the dozens of people who know both of these guys in real life.

Now please. Do your candidate a favor and go back to working on your internet novella featuring the unknown Harry Potter brother - maybe throw in some juicy "twincest", I believe that's what you and your perverted ilk like to write about (it's so hilarious to see a role-player get worked up about rape fantasies based on the perverted shit you people create). And let the grownups continue to discuss this topic, OK? Seriously, it would be better for your fandom friends if you shut the fuck up, I'm embarrassed for you and now them.

I fail to see how this is any different than fanfic writers creating stories that contain rape scenes and posting them in communities?

Neither the writers nor Jameth act upon this, so what's the big deal?

Perhaps it's that the LJAbuse team doesn't set policy, but does have to enforce it. So in voting for her, she gets a chance (maybe) to impact the bad policies that she's been having to enforce. She's got experience with the hell of how fractious it gets and how crazy it is behind the scenes when LJ Administration goes off and sets bizarre policies, and hopefully, she can tell them when they are getting close to doing something like that again, and at least mitigate the problem somewhat. I don't think anyone in this position can chance anything, as it is an advisory board, but at least they can say 'you're going to hit a wall if you do this.'

So where you're seeing a negative, I'm seeing a positive. No starry eyes about what the advisory board can do, and real experience what happens when bad policies are implemented and the behind the scenes fallout. It's a reason to vote for her, not against.

I don't think there's much thought behind it. Most people who've bothered to comment seem to be saying "oh, she was just doing her job; she didn't make the policy". Viewing things through Fandom's perspective where Strikethrough was like the OMG HOLOCAUST, that's like letting off a concentration camp guard because he wasn't a member of the SS. I do expect her, however, to be likened to Oskar Schindler at any minute.

I don't know if she worked directly on the Strikethrough bannings or not, but to me it doesn't matter. By remaining a member of an organization which people perceive, fairly or no, as committing a witchhunt against her own people and her own community, she put maintaining her position ahead of her principles.

Like I've said, her continued involvement in LJ Abuse does not make her more qualified; it makes her part of the problem. It's curious how so many fandom people are willing to overlook her role, active or passive, in such a divisive and destructive chain of events. At worst, she applied unjust policies to her own friends and supporters, and at best, she stood back and did nothing, rather than risking her position, while others did so.

I also don't understand why she would continue to participate in the deletion/banning of journals if she disagreed with it. I do feel that as a volunteer, she didn't have the financial constraint overhead that would cause a paid employee to stay and do something against their conscience. ("If I quit, I'll have no money and won't be able to pay my bills and will lose my house.") I understand that although she is "just" a volunteer, the position is probably very important to her and she wouldn't want to lose that by speaking out or dropping out. Fair enough.

What I don't understand is: it's the Internet. It isn't like she showed up to work a physical location and her manager told her that she must do this, even if it's against her conscience. Is there a 'work schedule' that schedules when and for how long a volunteer should be logged in and doing LJ Abuse stuff? And if so, is this information somehow recorded/clocked in to keep track of it? If not, I don't understand why those who disagreed with the orders just didn't log in and do the dirty work. Just ignore the e-mail or journal post or turn off the computer and say you were busy with real life if confronted by those in charge.

It may be a very passive thing to do and ignoring a situation you find wrong isn't quite ethical, but I think being a chicken is a lot better than doing things that are against your conscience when you really have no issues backing you into a corner and forcing your hand.

Another point of concern that occurs to me is this: in StrikeThrough (as in Nipplegate, etc., ad infinitem), the problem wasn't a new policy or a changed policy, but a change in the way the existing policy was enforced.

Who's responsible for enforcing the policies? Oh yeah, LJ Abuse and their seekrit policy document.

The TOS didn't change. The interpretation of it did, and to the worse as far as fandom was concerned. And their lead candidate was a part of the team that arbitrarily chose to enforce the policy in a new, anti-fandom fashion.

Still not seeing why that's not a problem, or how that makes her a "pro-fandom" candidate and Jameth an "anti-fandom" candidate. Is it really just that she's active in fandom and he isn't? That's just silly. Belonging to fandom doesn't mean you have that group's best interests at heart (and legomymalfoyy's involvement with LJ Abuse tells me she doesn't have fandom's interests at heart) any more than not belonging to fandom makes you "anti-fandom".

To give a serious answer to your question (I can't point you to any specific post, except maybe one in bookshop's journal (and please keep discussion in here and don't spam/troll her journal with """questions""") or in fandom_votes: the reason a lot of fans are okay with it is because legomymalfoy is a part of fandom. She is well known to many people, she's a moderator at Fiction Alley, she's involved, and people feel like they understand her motives and decisions and judgment and allegiances. And also, I think a lot of people are able to separate the actions of the CEO and those in charge and "the soldiers on the frontlines", so to speak. Though a lot of people have a popular conception that all fans were combatitive during Strikethrough like, for example, the members of innocence_jihad, the majority of fans were more interested in compromising and trying to get LJ to work with them, to get the deleted communities reinstated -- and this was largely successful, thanks in part to intermediary people such as legomymalfoy and some other fans who also worked for LJ. The end result wasn't completely satisfying, but fans managed to get their immediate demands addressed.

The other reason is simply that a lot of fans want to have a fandom candidate win and are going to back the one that's winning. Simple as that.
