First ever LiveJournal User-Representative Election
PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU VOTE!!!

Eligibility
Those eligible to vote in this poll are:
-Users with accounts created before March 11, 2008
-Users who are not using Cyrillic language services (there is a poll for Cyrillic users at lj_election_ru)
-Users who have accounts with validated email addresses

Voting
Users should select their first choice, second choice, and third choice candidates from the drop-down list.

Determining the winner
The poll will be closed at 9:00 p.m. PDT Thursday, May 29, 2008
-If a user has more than 50% of the first-choice vote, that candidate will be declared the winner
-If no user has more than 50% of the first-choice vote, we will begin using an Instant Runoff process. The user with the lowest tally for first-choice vote will be eliminated, and the second choice candidate on those ballots will be substituted as first choice. This process will continue (drop lowest candidate, reassign to next vote, tally again) until any user has more than 50% of the vote.
-If all ballots are exhausted and no candidate has more than 50% of the vote, we will return to the first round and award the election to the candidate with the most 1st choice votes.

Member Term
The new Advisory Board member will be announced by the end of the day on Friday, May 30, 2008 and will begin their one-year term of service on June 1, 2008.

THANK YOU!

If it's being viewed as only a "token request," why was everyone so up in arms that she didn't make it until now? I'm not trying to be snotty here, that's an honest question.

And I will also point out again that many of us who have been rallying to get fandom to vote have been very clear in our denunciation of voting with sockpuppets. We've been urging people not to do it and have been since early in the week. Among the group of us, we have reached a far larger percentage of fandom with that message than LMM would have been able to just posting about it in her journal. The sockpuppet issue is definitely a problem, don't get me wrong, but it's a problem for all of the candidates and a flaw in LJ's overall plan for this election. It is not a problem unique to the fandom candidates. For that reason, I actually agree with cambler that the election should be invalidated and some more solid way of choosing a representative found.

Erm... sorry to tl;dr there.

I love that icon. :-)

It is unlikely and almost impossible that, if what has been alleged, that hundreds of people voted with sockpuppets, all of these people would be willing and have the time to go back and log in to all those different accounts and change their votes.

I agree, mostly because I think these people did it for LULZ and not because they particularly wanted to see LMM win. It's another way of trolling and perhaps even a way to make fandom look back than as a way of helping.

And, from what I've seen, it's people from fandom who have been vocal about double voting not being problem.

Okay. I haven't seen anyone saying it's not a problem personally, but we don't hang out in the same places so I may have missed something. What I have seen is people in fandom saying they don't believe it's happening to the extent it's been rumored, and I agree with that. I don't think people outside of fandom can understand how we operate and our ability to organize and, yes, to get crazy and ridiculous about things. To me, this is just a public example of that on a grand scale. I'm not saying there's no sockpuppeting going on, I'm just saying I think it's probably only X% of the vote as compared to the claims that it's 50X% of the vote.

You're referring to the "Isn't it cheating when his side do it, too?" bit, I assume? Because I'm not sure I understand where you're coming from otherwise.

I had read that earlier but I don't know laura_holt_pi so I didn't attribute it as a comment from someone in fandom.

Oh, whoops.

Okay, yeah, that statement is pretty disturbing. I think it says volumes about the person who said it that s/he posted anon. It's also a pretty cagey move, because there are some of us who would have jumped on him/her for that. There is some honor in fandom, I promise. ;-)
