partly_bouncy's nomination
My name is Laura. On LiveJournal, I am partly_bouncy. I am nominating myself as a candidate for the Advisory Board elections.

I would like to serve because I believe that if you support something and see value in a project where you can be helpful, you should get involved and try to make it better. If you don't think something has value or can be improved upon, you leave and try to do it better elsewhere. This is a philosophy that has been central to my on-line involvement in the past decade. I believed in FanFiction.Net and volunteered there in 2000. I later had problems with FanFiction.Net and created my own fan fiction archive. I didn't think LiveJournal was a good platform for interactive writing of the history of fandom so I created FanHistory.Com. I thought that FanLib was doing interesting work but could handle some things better. Rather than rail at the fringes, I tried to help them improve. I've helped out other fan fiction archives like FanWorks.Org because I believed they were doing good work and I could help them become better.

I want to now serve LiveJournal's users for similar reasons: I believe in the service, love the service, use the service and I believe I could help improve their relationship with their user base by helping mediate in disputes.

I feel I would make a good representative for several reasons. I can represent multiple perspectives. I promise to attend meetings. I promise not to be involved in launching competing services. I have good relationships with other commercial services and know how to get my voice heard.

Expanding on these points, while I might not agree with your perspective on an issues, if I think it is valid I promise to present it to people who can make a difference and make sure that your position gets heard. If there is a rejection of that perspective, I promise to go back to you and explain it to you. FanHistory, which involves documenting the history of fandom, is a project where I have had to deal with users with diverse and sometimes conflicting perspectives for several years. These different groups that I've had a hand in trying to articulate their history include fandom_wank, the Organization for Transformative Works, Rescue Rangers slash fen, Rescue Rangers furries, Encyclopedia Dramatica, fans who want to commercialize fan fiction like Lady Sybilla, AdultFanFiction.Net staff, former AdultFanFiction.Net staff, both sides of StrikeThrough 2007, both sides of the FanLib situation, east coast vidding and west coast vidding, Cassandra Claire supporters and her detractors, and both sides of Race Fail 2009. This is a really disparate selection of groups. This sort of experience of dealing with these groups gives me that grounding to fairly represent multipe perspectives to LiveJournal, rather than just acting as a lobbyist for my single perspective, or the perspective of a small group of users I represent.

Second, I promise to do two things the previous representative did not do: faithfully attend the meetings and report back to the community. I realize I can't represent users if I do not attend. If there is a conflict time-wise, I will reschedule the other event so I can attend the meetings. If I can't attend the meeting, I will make damned sure that people know why and that I have a very good reason. In addition, I will report on what actually happened at these gatherings, so that key influencers among the LiveJournal user community can pass along the news.

Third, I feel like I would make a good representative is that I have zero intention of being involved with the launch of a service specifically set up to compete with LiveJournal. I love LiveJournal. I have been a user since 2001. I have a permanent account. I have many friends I've made as a result of the service. It serves my needs. I promise not to be like our previous User Advisory board member, who ended up helping with the launch of a competing service. That would be an insult to you, who voted to represent me, and to a service that I love.

Finally, I feel like I would be a good User Advisory board member is that I have positive relationships with several other commercial services. Many of these are in the wiki space. These relationships have taught me about the competing interests between a company's interests and a user's interests. These interests are not always the same. My relationships have allowed me to better understand how a user can enact meaningful change while lobbying for his or her own interests. It means that if there is a problem that people have, I have one of the best chances of helping change happen. It means that I am able to articulate LiveJournal's position in a way that can best be understood from a user perspective so that even if you don't agree with LiveJournal's actions, you'll understand why they made them and then respond accordingly.

I'd really love the opportunity to be your representative. For more information or to discuss it with me, I have created a public comment post on my LiveJournal here. Other contact information is available on my profile.
