2009 Nominations are open

Nominations are now open. For more information, please see the profile for this community.

Nomination posts

If you would like to nominate yourself to become a candidate for the 2009 Advisory Board election, you should make a post in this community, including the following information:

  • Clearly state that you are nominating yourself as a candidate for the Advisory Board elections.

  • Include a statement about why you think you would make a good representative or why you’d like to serve.

  • Use an lj-cut if the post is more than two paragraphs.

  • Set Comment Screening to All Comments.

  • Optionally, you may also include a link to an entry in your journal or a community that further states your position or platform, or that answers the following questions:

    1. What do you think is the value of LiveJournal?

    2. What changes would you like to see LiveJournal make in the next year?

    3. Why do you want to be the elected representative?

    4. What do you think are the community’s greatest concerns?

    5. What skills, qualifications, or unique perspective do you think you would bring to this position?

Supporting a Nominee

To support a nominee’s candidacy, you should comment to their nomination entry stating "I support this nomination" or something substantially similar. You may support multiple candidates’ nominations. Nominees need 300 motions of support in order to be invited to be a candidate in the election. Candidates are asked to assist by only unscreening those comments that express this motion of support, and election moderators will help with that process.

First ever LiveJournal User-Representative Election

PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU VOTE!!!

Eligibility
Those eligible to vote in this poll are:
-Users with accounts created before March 11, 2008
-Users who are not using Cyrillic language services (there is a poll for Cyrillic users at lj_election_ru)
-Users who have accounts with validated email addresses

Voting
Users should select their first choice, second choice, and third choice candidates from the drop-down list.

Determining the winner
The poll will be closed at 9:00 p.m. PDT Thursday, May 29, 2008
-If a user has more than 50% of the first-choice vote, that candidate will be declared the winner

The user with the lowest tally for first-choice vote will be eliminated, and the second choice candidate on those ballots will be substituted as first choice. This process will continue (drop lowest candidate, reassign to next vote, tally again) until any user has more than 50% of the vote.
-If all ballots are exhausted and no candidate has more than 50% of the vote, we will return to the first round and award the election to the candidate with the most 1st choice votes.

Member Term
The new Advisory Board member will be announced by the end of the day on Friday, May 30, 2008 and will begin their one-year term of service on June 1, 2008.

Elections closing tonight

The nomination process is now closed.

I'll be counting supports again overnight, but if you've gotten 100 and feel I've missed you (or you're just anxious to get your email from me with the Nomination Certification), please send me a private message and I'll reply as soon as I'm able. If you have sent back your Nomination Certification and *not* gotten an email from me saying I've received it, or if you receive one tonight, please be sure I've received it back before 4:00 PDT on Friday, May 16, 2008.

The next event in this community will be the election poll. The poll will be posted on May 22, 2008 and be closed on May 29, 2008.

I'd like your vote... here's why.

I'm a new father and a slow poster, but I'm not a new face: I joined LJ for the second time in 2006, after stints blogging with Movable Type, WordPress, Blogger... and that old favorite, notepad/HTML. On December 3rd 2007 I asked in a post: "So, who is this company that just bought LiveJournal?" when others hadn't even known the change was happening. Because I was afraid it meant the end for LJ, right after I returned to the it.

I'm not an easy joiner, because I hate when the communities I join turn into something I don't like, or just plain disappear. But there are enough familiar faces, promise and plain good stuff here in LiveJournal I took the plug. Now I want to help make sure this community I've joined 'keeps on keepin' on' just the way it has through three different ownerships and an epoch of internet evolution.

THe LJ Advisory Board memebership will help steer the big wheel of mixed interests that will determine what roads this community travels. I want on this board. Short and to the point: if you will help me, please vote for me by adding a comment to this entry.

Thank you very much for reading.

Bio: John Mierau is a husband, father, dog-walker and writer.

He is also a trainer, IT consultant and internet dweller puzzling how internet technologies change our perception of ourselves and broaden our definition of - and participation in - reality.

A bit too much a geek for his wife's comfort, John lean towards environmentalism, participatory democracy & simplifying life... but still buy disposable diapers, forget to vote sometimes and own way too much stuff.

Not the same old nomination. Instead, a new old nomination!

I'm John fuzzface00 McMahon, and I would like to represent you on the LJ Advisory Board.

Who Am I

  • LJ user since October 2003. I've got accounts other places (that I rarely use), but LJ is my home
  • Happy (ok... mostly happy) owner of a permanent account. I speak S2
  • On the Internet since 1989. On associated networks (BITNET, SPAN) since 1985. I've run social and business servers going back to the days of the BITNET RELAYs. I've done Network Engineering for a Tier 1 ISP and a few Government Agencies. I've done front-line tech support. This Internet/Technology thing is not new for me. I have to admit, however, I am always learning new things thanks to LJ
  • My day job is providing installation services for a Network Appliance company
  • I've probably been on staff for more conventions and gatherings than most folks. I am used to representing the so-called "middle" and the so-called "fringe". I think it can be an exciting (frightening?) challenge to represent everyone
  • Similarly, I've been a officer in professional and social organizations before, so I CAN HAZ REEL LEEDER EXPERIENCE!
  • I am, in brief, an experienced professional networking geek who gives a damn about LJ. I want it to grow both in the cultural sense, and the business sense
I'm not going to waste your time with a huge biography. If you would like to know more about me, feel free to check out my journal, my profile or drop me a message

My Platform

  • For LJ to continue to be a wonderful spot on the web, it needs to continue growing
    • Make existing features easier to use. In some cases, all we need is better documentation. In others we need to take it apart and build it back up. LJ is great, but remember how hard it was to jump in at first? We need to make it more inviting for new users
    • Rework account feature levels where the experience is "great" at every level. Sure, there is a need to support the underlying business, but it can be effective without getting in your face. Why is every big movie of this summer on Myspace (Tom is not my friend) but not LJ? There are untapped sources of revenue out there for sponsorship and advertising which LJ should exploit to support the business and make it better for users
    • Introduce features which would allow more cross-pollination and cross-content with other blogging and social systems. Encourage more sites to adopt OpenID and make our OpenID support better. Open up more so we can draw more diversity into LJ
    • Encourage mash-ups and (white hat) hacking through better open interfaces and Google-like "Summer of Code" initiatives
    • Learn from the experiences of the "other LJ code sites" and incorporate their knowledge to make the code better for all
    • Attract "big name" users from other systems to at least co-host their material on LJ, or switch to us outright
  • For LJ to continue to be a wonderful spot on the web, it needs to respect the existing users
    • Make "the rules" crystal clear (or as close as we can get)
    • Enforce "the rules" equally. Document automated processes (like the search system) that enforce the rules
    • Document all appropriate business processes so every user (and the LJ business) are on an even playing field
    • Maintain appropriate levels of security and privacy
    • Add outside arbitration as a final method of conflict resolution between account holders and the business side of LJ

In Conclusion

I have the experience to do this job. My platform is intended to support the users and the business of LJ because one cannot survive without the other. I am not afraid of the "business side" nor the "special interests" or the "super users". I'm a garden variety user, like most of us, and I want to bring that point of view to the table for me and for you.

To sum up, I would like the opportunity to represent you at a time when many are wary of "where LJ is going". If you like what I'm suggesting, then please consider supporting my nomination.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this!

EDIT (5/15/08 00:52 ET) WOW! THANK YOU! I HAVE RECEIVED ENOUGH COMMENTS TO RUN FOR THE ADVISORY BOARD POSITION!

Thank you all for your support during the nomination process. I will be submitting my Nomination Certification shortly. If you would like to know more about my platform, or you would like to suggest/discuss something concerning the Advisory Board position, please contact me via my "talk to the LJAB candidate" post, or feel free to send me an LJ message.

Thanks again!

what the fuck is this? voting on a livejournal council? this is the stupidest thing I've ever heard!

actually.. no.

you should vote for me. If voted for, I will pledge to ridicule, belittle, insult and make fun of every last "idea" or "notion" that is introduced in the conference calls. every time the LJ council is called upon to try and make headway, I will do my damnedest to be blind, stinking drunk by the time the first call is rung in and to make sure that as many calls are abandoned due to hilarious ridiculousness, and no progress is made whatsoever. if it is a good session, I will have made someone quit. and I will record the whole thing, posting audio clips for the peoples to laugh at.

do you think this is a stupid idea?
do you want to see this movement abandoned?

vote for me! and I'll fuck it up, but good.

My dear Ljer's.

Vote for me.

I've been active on Lj for about six years now (see:khaosmoon) I started in college. Here are some reasons why I should be elected.

-Lj needs risk takers. I am a huge risk takers. I moved to South Korea from my comfy suburban existance virually on a whim last October and am loving it, even though there was potential for huge disaster.

-I'm the face of diversity. I'm a out and proud homosexual, with a strong stance against using the word "faggot" and other hate speech words that are sometimes freely tossed around in communities (you want to use it in your own journal go for it, not cool in communities).

-I have a good sense of hilarity and can take a joke as good as I can dish one out.

-I have celebrity endorsements! elysesewell and I are good friends and often cavort around Seoul causing mayhem, when she's in town. (Well I would have her endorsement if I bothered to tell her about running and not just up and decided to on a whim at three in the 2:00 in the morning...I'll get around too it)

-I've been active in several communities. and held office in a number of clubs in college, including my fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, as well as my colleges Gay Straight Alliance (co-founder and first President).

thats all I got!

I also promise gold, fortune, superpowers and a one night stand with the historical character (dead or alive!) of your choosing, upon my election.

Vote for me.
